4. Getting Started: The Basic Ingredients of a Food Blog

Before we get into specifics, let’s begin with the basic elements, or “ingredients,” of a good food blog. I am going to begin by describing the basic, individual elements, and then talk about how to put them together to create your food blog. If you already have a food blog, you can skim or skip this chapter and move on to Chapter 5.

A RECIPE TEMPLATE

If you’re running a food blog, you will most likely include recipes. Although restaurant review blogs are popular, we will focus on food blogs showcasing recipes, from you or others, for your followers to use. To run a recipe-based food blog, you must decide how to present your recipes. This will take the form of a recipe template, or format. The template can run from more minimalist to quite detailed. On the more detailed side, many people will begin with several high-resolution photos of the dish, often with stylized text added, as well as descriptive prose of their inspiration and thoughts surrounding the dish. Then they will include the true “template” portion, which usually includes the following:

  • Serves— a field that includes the number of people the dish serves
  • Preparation Time, Cooking Time, and Ready In Time — to tell people how much time it takes to prepare the dish
  • Special Diet — to indicate that a dish is special-diet-compliant, such as paleo, gluten free, etc.,
  • Ingredients — a list of everything needed to prepare the recipe, including possible variations or substitutes, and standardized measurement unit notation (i.e., Tablespoon is always T or Tbsp., oz. for ounces, etc.)
  • Directions — clearly written, enumerated, step-by-step directions for preparing and cooking the dish
  • Comments — a response functionality to let users can ask questions and provide feedback on recipe preparation
